India has made consistent improvement in primary and secondary education since its independence from British rule in 1947. However, there are a number of roadblocks on the way to obtaining universal education. Lack of enough funding, physical infrastructure, and qualified teachers are among them. India spends only a little over 3% of its GDP on education, compared to a target of 6% established by every national education strategy since 1968.
